CHAPTER SIX

As he worked, the afternoon sun beat upon Prescott's back, and the earth threw the heat up into his face. Not a single cloud marred the vast expanse of blue sky. There would be no temporary respite from the glare.

Sweat had left darkened patches on Prescott's shirt, and he felt the grit on his skin. But he only had one more row to drag and then he'd be finished for the day. Tomorrow he would start hiring his construction crew.

Clucking to the horses, he guided the team in a tight turn. He was just about to smack the reins against their rumps when he saw Felicity Blessing approaching him, bucket in hand.

She stopped near the horses. "I thought you might be thirsty, Mr. Jones. It's unusually hot for this time of year." She held the bucket toward him. "Would you like a drink of water?"

He lifted the reins over his head. "That's kind of you, Miss Blessing."

"It's the least I can do after what you did for Angel."

He lifted a dipper full of water from the bucket and drained it in several long gulps, then repeated the action two more times. The fourth time he raised the dipper above him and let it pour over his head. When he opened his eyes, water dripping off his hair, he found her smiling as she watched him.

She had an unbelievable smile. It touched not only the corners of her mouth but her eyes as well. He couldn't help grinning in return as he passed her the dipper, their fingers touching briefly in the exchange.

She took a small step backward, her smile already fading. "You're welcome to help yourself to the water whenever you like." She turned to leave.

"Listen," he said quickly, stopping her, "why don't I come have a look at Angel now? Give the team a rest." He pointed to the bucket. "Then I'll fill that up and give the horses a drink, if you don't mind."

"I don't mind."

"Good." He wished she would smile again. "Here." He reached out and took the bucket from her hands. "Let me carry that."

As they fell into step, Felicity said, "Angel's slept most of the day, but she drank a little cream a while ago."

"That's a good sign."

"Is it?"

"Yes." He opened the back door, then waited for her to lead the way into the house.

The kitchen was as small a room as he'd expected it to be. There was barely enough space for the black cooking stove, the dry sink, an icebox, a small cupboard, and a table with two chairs. But it was neat and uncluttered, the same as the other two rooms of the house.

In the bedroom, only a few steps away from the sitting room and kitchen, he found Angel where he'd left her that morning. When he stroked the top of her head, she opened her eyes and meowed at him.

"Maybe you learned a lesson today." Prescott sat on the edge of the bed. "Do you think so?"

"Reow."

He checked the bandages.
